In project development, the focus is not only on the creation of a production-ready script (script development) but also on film calculation and film financing or the filling of important creative positions in the film staff (direction, camera, editing). 4] Editors, producers and directors can be offered a project at various stages, but a screenwriter can also put his own ideas into practice, if necessary with the help of other artists. The script development describes the broad period of time from the research of a story to the final version of the script. A distinction is made between developments based on a template (novels, comics or PC games) or based on an original idea. Both lead to a first exposé, which in a 90-minute film comprises about eight pages, in order to be able to explain the film plot briefly and coherently with figures and chronology. As the story develops, the script is developed into a treatment (story without dialogue) by a screenwriter in consultation with the producer and the director[5]. At the end there is the finished script (plot text with dialogue and possibly stage directions and camera angles). Parallel to the creative development is the organisational and economic film financing.
This phase already requires some effort in the professional field, the coordination of many participants and some contractual and financial preparations and preliminary work, such as for script development. The financing of the project development is usually paid from own funds, film subsidies, funds from TV stations or through reserves of the screenwriters.[4]
In order to complete the project development and to get involved in the implementation of the film project, a Greenlight release of the project with a binding commitment to financing must be available, especially for larger productions.
